In Michael Rooker’s break out performance as Henry in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer he helps convey the story of a recently released sociopath and his friend Otis (played by Tom Towles). At first glance, to me, this film was somewhat difficult to watch. Only because I know what Henry is and what he is capable of doing. Now, his buddy, Otis is a different story. Since both these ex-cons have been recently released from prison onto the streets of Chicago, Illinois they find refuge at Otis’ sister’s apartment/house/whatever. Meanwhile, she is aware that her brother Otis is a convicted rapist Henry does not let her know of his problems. Henry is your typical psychopathic murderer. He is quiet, methodical, and an engineer of his target’s demise.
Throughout this film we are shown into the true mind of a murderer. Even after this movie I was certain Michael Rooker was a killer. That is how well he portrays Henry in his first theatrical role. At times, this is a very disturbing film. I did not think it was fun at all but kind of a bummer. I had a few laughs from Tom Towles character, but nothing more than a chuckle here and there. If you like the cast I would check this movie out whenever you get the chance as it is something definitely very different to see especially for it’s age.
